Ever since I was a little kid, my mom has been a huge part of fostering my creativity and creative spirit through a variety of ways. Whether that was singing in the car, singing in choir, playing an instrument, or learning new crafts, among a myriad of other creative outlets. Whether it was a rainy Sunday in the basement or her leading my girl scout troop, I have always had arts and crafts in my life.
Not only have they always been in my life, but I have always enjoyed them as well. Since becoming an adult, I love finding new interests and then buying everything I could possibly have for that specific craft. The problem here lies in actually doing the craft on a regular basis with all of said new materials. I truly think that buying craft supplies and crafting can be considered different hobbies… And I happen to be interested in both!
While many interests come and go, crocheting and sewing have been staples since I was a little kid. While they have also admittedly ebbed and flowed, these are the hobbies that have always had a section of my mind. From starting a neighborhood company with my next door neighbor where we sold very shoddy worksmanship in the form of my mom’s scrap fabric single stitched together (not even inside out…) with a stapled on bag handle (yes… stapled…) to the clothes, bags, and quilts I can attempt to make now. With yarn, I have evolved from making very thin, finger-knit scarves until the wee hours of the mirning in a tent during one of our sleepovers (same entrpreneuer friend as my sewing endeavors) to the intricate patterns I am able to follow now to create all kinds of things, as well as having the confidence to teach other people how to crochet (many often lap me in terms of skill).
All of this being said, I graduated from graduate school in the last year and, for the first time since I can even remember, I do not have to come home and do homework to prepare for the next day. In fact, I am trying to not even bring work home and am trying to create a separation of work and home life, as I deserve that from my years and years of hard work. Now, I have some time on my hands after work and on the weekends that I dont want to spend glued to a screen, so going outside with the dog and crafting away have been holy grails for me!
Another trait that I have been trying to work on is finishing a project. As I stated before, I love learning new things to do and going all in (financially, mentally, etc…) and end up finding new crafts that I want to do before finishing the others. My goal from here on out is to not move on to another project until I have finished the one prior. It does not need to be perfect (this is a big reason I don’t finish things…) it just needs to be completed!
In the coming weeks, I will be going over different activities that I enjoy doing, including some tutorials for how to get into different crafts, and how to enjoy the mundane.
Let me know if there is any craft you would like to see, or any pattern (sewing, crochet, knitting) that I should try out! Also let me know what else I can post to bring more information and help into your craft world (or the rest of the world 🙂 )
Let’s enjoy life and creativity again!
